one flew over the cuckoos nest scene anaylisis

This scene is taken from one flew over the cuckoos nest
the setting of the movie is in a mental institute and in this video its of the men having a group therapy session

here is Nurse Ratched and a nurse sitting at the front of the circle of men, in a wide shot. this shot seperates the patients from the nurses. I think this is important and it shows their posture is calm and neutral in contrast to the rest.

here this closer shot of Mr Harding allows us to see more of his features. in this head and shoulders shot we are able to see his reaction to Nurse Ratcheds patronizing questions as he gets more and more agitated

here the camera zooms up as we are able to see more details of nurse Ratcheds calm demeanor as she takes in the answers to Mr Hardings words. We see no emotion but her expression still seems a bit smug as if she is having fun tormenting Mr Harding.

Here is a mid shot of Mc Murphy. In this scene it is most often midshots of Mc Muphys character as we are able to see he is a bit more sane then the other patients. To me this creates the third group. The first being the patients, then the nurses, and then McMurphy. To me, this establishes the levels of sanity within all the characters in this scene.

Here is a close-up of Taber, one of the patients. His expression shows of him listening to Mr Hardings rant. As we watch more of Taber there is a lot more close-ups of his opinions as we see his emotions come out through his expressions we see in these close-ups

This shot is a mid-shot, and I think the reason they chose to do this rather than use a close-up, is because we as an audience wont become personally attached to his character. It's like the directors want us to chose a side unconsciously of a group. Here in this mid shot we also get a lot of hand movements showing us his aggravation as he gets more and more annoyed.

In this wide shot, we are able to see the groups more clearly. Here it shows whom agrees with whom.

Here is Martini, a patient who sees that the other patients are ganging up on Mr Harding. They use a head and shoulders shot here because a closeup, would be to uncomfortable for the viewer as his expression is one of pain.

In this over the shoulder group mid-shot of the men, we are able to see the groups from a different perspective giving more emphasis on the grouping.

This close-up of Taber is good because it captures his mentalness and immaturity clearly, and reminds you of where they are. It also gives humour which contrasts to a similar situation if the people were normal.

Here in this mid-shot is of McMurphy taking in the whole scene. As a wider shot, compare to all the closer shots  of the other characters, its easier to see this and examine this easier as the other shots are in your face. We see his humour in the situation, as he laughs about whats happening in the room as everyone looses it.

A mid Shot of Nurse Ratched showing how composed she is in all this Chaos. This shot is important it shows how uncaring she is. With that subtle smugness, we see shes enjoying the others discomfort.

Here is a close-up of Taber as her picks on Mr Harding more. We are able to see his mental side coming out through his close-ups

Here is a head and shoulders shot of Martini, just completely breaking down. HIs mental side shows through these shot as it shows his overly emotional responses to the hurt Mr Harding is getting. the shot is wider as we get to see his body language.

Here the clip shows Nurse Ratched still calm and compose, unfeeling, and uncaring. I think this was an important shot to end on Because its the last shot we see after the chaos that happened  throughout the whole clip. her expression never changed, even as we were able to take a closer look at her face in the close-up
